What is Red Light Therapy and how does it work?
The best analogy for how red light therapy works, is to think of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis for a plant is the same as photobiomodulation for the human body. Certain wavelengths of red light will penetrate the cells of the body to heal tissue, reduce pain, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, detox, reduce wrinkles and acne, and improve mood.
How does it work?
RLT will penetrate the skin approximately by 5 cm (~2 inches). When the cells absorb the light, the cell gets excited and starts working to your benefit. To be more specific, if you remember the powerhouse of the cell, the mitochondria, it will elevate the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecule which is energy source of the body. The more ATP you have, the more oxygen will link to the ATP; therefore the body is much more capable to heal the targeted area of the body.
How often should you use RLT?
When you start using RLT, it is recommended to use it 2-3 times a week, for 2-3 weeks. After, the patient will notice an improvement and from there he/she can drop down to once per week or every other week which will be maintenance mode.
If you are training for a competition, have an autoimmune flare-up, suffered an injury, post-op or postpartum, you can use it as much as you like, there is no harm to use it daily.
In summary, Red Light Therapy machine will help you heal faster due to the increase of ATP generation and oxygen utilization in the cells. The more you use it, the more benefit you will gain. Every individual, can use the machine at the rate that seems to fit their lifestyle.
